Omphalophobia, and Popsicle Sticks.

I was talking to my friend, Mike, about nothing too important, just chit chat, and I can’t render who brought it up first, but we both can’t stand for a Popsicle stick to touch our teeth, or the tongue. I think I did, because he was astonished and said he doesn’t know anybody else who can’t stand that. We both don’t quite know what it is, but it gives us the ultimate willies. Fudgescicles are the worst, especially watching someone eating them. They don’t break off like regular popsicles. They have to be sucked down to the bitter end. Popsicles break off. I found out there’s a definition for that. It’s a phobia. It’s called Xylophobia.

A phobia is something that “causes an individual to experience extreme, irrational fear about a situation, living creature, place, or object. When a person has a phobia, they will often shape their lives to avoid what they consider to be dangerous.” According to the below.

My phobias aren’t viewed as dangerous, necessarily, to me, but definitely make me feel uncomfortable.

The other phobia I have, which is not as recognized, is fear of belly buttons. I can’t stand touching mine, somebody else touching mine, somebody else touching theirs. It really grosses me out. That phobia is called Omphalophobia.

I checked out several phobias and there are some odd ones. The most common weird phobia I’ve heard of is the cotton in aspirin bottles and how it makes some people cringe. Touching it, seeing it, etc…That particular phobia of cotton is called Sidonglobophobia. I could never understand that one. I tried to be empathetic. But, I never could feel that one.

Luckily, for sidonglobophobia-ers cotton isn’t found in pill bottles anymore pills are now coated with what is called an enteric coating, which is made of, according to definition of, fatty acids, waxes, shellac, plastics and plant fibers. (?). The cotton was only used to keep the pills from banging together and breaking them up. Because of the coating, that doesn’t happen these days Thank Goodness!

Cotton Me Tender (!?!)

Look….. a cotton bouquet

Here’s a list of some of the oddest phobias;

Arachibutyrophobia | Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth. …

Arithmophobia | Fear of math. …

Chirophobia | Fear of hands. …

Chloephobia | Fear of newspapers. …

Globophobia (Fear of balloons) …

There’s also this one; Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia. Which happens to be the fear of long words. Funny.

Omphalophobia | Fear of Umbilicus (Bello Buttons). ME!!

Paraskevidekatriaphobia is the fear of Friday the 13th.

Next Is some pictures of people’s phobias.

Phobias are real, and usually are treatable if there is a threat and living is totally unmanageable. I guess I’m lucky. There are ways to work around my phobias. Wear long shirts, put a bar of soap on my belly button when in the bath tub, don’t look at people who have midriffs, avoid popsicles that don’t require much stick contact, and say no to tongue depressors.

They also say phobias are from usually a significant, somewhat tragic event or just predisposed from an elder…. Whatever you call that… inherited…

What are other phobias that people have?
